Private Sessions or Group Classes: Which and When
October 16, 2026 · 5 min read · Bespoke Studio
A private session costs more than a group class, so the question is reasonable: is it worth it? The answer depends less on your budget than on what you are actually trying to solve right now.
What a Private Session Is Good At
- Starting from zero. One hour of undivided attention will teach you more vocabulary and equipment familiarity than four group classes.
- Working around something specific. An injury, a surgery, a pregnancy, a diagnosis — anything that needs the programme built around it rather than modified within it.
- Breaking a plateau. A fresh pair of eyes on a movement you have been doing slightly wrong for a year.
- Anxiety about group settings. A few privates first makes walking into a class far less daunting.
- Advanced work. Exercises that genuinely need a spotter or constant adjustment.
What Group Classes Are Good At
- Consistency. A recurring class on the schedule is far easier to keep than an appointment you rebook each time.
- Cost. Straightforwardly, you get more sessions per dollar.
- Energy. Working alongside other people is motivating in a way that is difficult to replicate alone.
- Community. This is not a small thing. The people you see every Tuesday are a large part of why you keep coming.
- Variety. Different instructors, different sequences, different weeks.
The Pattern That Works for Most People
Two or three private sessions at the start, then group classes as your regular practice, with an occasional private when something changes — a new injury, a new goal, or a sense that you have stopped progressing. This gets you a solid foundation without an ongoing premium, and it means your group classes are far more productive because you know what the cues mean.
Getting the Most From a Private
Come with questions. A private session where you say "just give me a workout" is a wasted opportunity — you can get a workout in a class for a third of the price. Bring the specific things: the exercise that never feels right, the shoulder that clicks, the goal you have in mind for the spring. An hour aimed at your actual questions is worth several aimed at nothing in particular.
A Note on Semi-Privates
If cost is the obstacle, ask about semi-private sessions with a friend or partner. You get most of the individual attention at a meaningfully lower price, and having someone to go with is one of the more reliable predictors of actually turning up.
